It's time to get away but the young ones are coming this trip. You could be off to a distant beach or maybe your just visiting an old friend. Things are bound to pleasant when you finally arrive but the journey may be a little rough. You stop to think about the last trip and just sigh!
Now here comes another round and there is no reason to believe it will be much better. They will get bored and try a bunch of childish tricks to pass the hours. You will get irritated and no one is happy. That pretty well sums it up doesn't it?
Let's recall:
22 of "how much farther is it?"
18 of "he hit me again."
10 of "Can I get something to eat?"
4 of "I'm bored."
The kids need something to occupy them for a long time. Maybe we could find a way to entertain them. If it weren't for the many bumps in the road books might work. Another idea is to try a portable television but the reception won't be too good in some places. Their favorite songs would work for just a few minutes. They are too short to last the whole trip.
I've got a better solution for you. Find yourself a cd player or even better a mp3 player like an iPod or the like. In late 2006 a SansDisk 2 Gigabyte player cost only 80 dollars. That's what I'm using. I've seen ads for some players as low as ten dollars. Be sure to bring this with you after you do the following:
1. Log on to a on-line audio book store
2. Select some good titles and load them to your computer.
3. Grab you mp3 player and plug it into the computer
4. Use your favorite music player to sync the audiobooks to the player.
A word about the audiobook's length is in order. Although a full length unabridged audiobook can be over ten hours long don't expect the young ones to complete it all at once. Their attention span will not stretch this far. Many children's titles are much shorter and can easily be completed during a trip. Try a full dramatization for a little added interest. The peaceful atmosphere while they are listening will make all your effort worthwhile.
I can picture something like this happening. You finally get to the end of the trip but the kids aren't quite done with the story. To your amazement you hear an unusual request. "I need you to go around the block a few times so I can hear the end." What you do next is up to you. Keep on going or just wait for the ride back home.
You get out of the car and realize, this was much better than before. Arriving with a positive attitude makes things so much more enjoyable.
If you're thinking, "It won't work for me," then consider this. Will you really know until you've tried it? Imagine the difference it could make. A fully dramatized version of "Treasure Island" would be a safe bet with which to begin.
