All websites contain Web content and/or copy. All of this copy and content can help you to make more money online, or it can be earning money all by itself. First, it's important to understand the difference between Web content and Web copy.

Web content - Web content by its nature either informs or entertains. Web content is usually articles on the website. But, there are also items such as video, photos, and sometimes audio files. Web content can be used by online businesses to interest customers in their website.

Web copy is used on sites where a specific response is wanted from the reader, such as a business seeking brand recognition. Website owners can use Web copy to persuade readers to click on links, sign up for email newsletters, or to buy items from the site. Web copy includes the slogan used on the site, as well as pages just for contact information, company information, etc.

So how can Web content and Web copy help you make more money? Here's how:

Web content - Many websites make the majority (if not all) of their money online as a result of Web content. There are large content networks, such as About.com, that use their content alone to attract readers, but there are many smaller ones. If the Web content is there, the readers will come, but the site has to have ads to bring in the money, or a membership fee will have to be charged to read that content. There are a few items to remember in order to make money with Web content:

1. Only publish high quality Web content. High quality Web content is a natural draw for readers, is often well-optimized for the Web without much extra SEO effort, and also naturally attracts quality backlinks to your website (therefore helping to increase search engine rankings, and its resulting traffic, which is then monetized).

2. Publish Web content regularly. By posting Web content on a regular basis, readers know when to expect new content, and will get into the habit of returning to your website. More traffic means more monetization potential. While ideally you should publish Web content both regularly and frequently, even if you can only publish once per week or once per month, schedule updates as regularly as possible.

3. Your content should be something that will attract new readers. Research topics and keywords by using Wordtracker or Overture and find out what is currently popular. Your content doesn't have to be full of keywords, but it does have to be quality information that will bring in readers and keep them coming back. If there are readers spending a lot of time to find specific information they need, supplying that information will fill that need. Don't forget to compare highly searched keyword phrases with the number of results for that same keyword phrase in search engines to determine market saturation.

Web copy - Web copyrighting is usually reserved for making sales or bringing people back to the site. A very common example of Web copy would be an online sales letter used to sell an e-book, often containing large bold subheadings and flashy, colored copy with testimonials and multiple chances to place an order.

Web copy doesn't have to be full of hype. Order pages all have Web copy to try to make the sale and to get the reader to buy right then. Some Web copy relies on guarantees to persuade readers to buy the item right then without worrying the outcome.

There are strong psychological underpinnings in good Web copy, getting people to act a certain way and with a certain outcome. Hiring a professional copywriter (or even studying copywriting yourself before developing your website or online business) can easily lead to higher conversions from website visitors to buyers, earning you more money online in the process.
